First, I decided to challenge myself by being creative with form. In other words, I took a genre that I had a vast amount of experience in and tried to present and structure it differently. I got this opportunity in my ENG 325 class. Here, I wrote a creative non-fiction piece called "Things my mother tells me...". The piece comments on the disparity between a parent's sayings/adages (eg. honesty is the best policy) and reality. The essay combines narrative-style stories from my own life with other facts and statistics. However, instead of presenting in a paragraph format, I presented the content in a list. The different presentation not only changed the reading experience but it also helped me shape the meaning and organization of the essay. Feel free to read the piece below.
